Elsa Schiaparelli transposed a drawing by Jean Cocteau onto a garment for her Autumn 1937 collection.
A woman's face in profile was embroidered on the grey linen jacket of a dinner suit. Her abundant fair hair trailed down the length of the right sleeve. A left hand in trompe-l’oeil seemed to hold a handkerchief. Jean Cocteau's signature was also embroidered on the jacket, as if he had signed a painting, conferring on the garment the status of a work of art. The embroidery was done by the House of Lesage.
