In this photograph by Man Ray, Schiaparelli's head is poised above a plaster torso. This photograph distorts reality to make something totally new, with its own identity and meaning.
This image was one of those Man Ray used to illustrate his essay “The Age of Light” in issues 3 and 4 of Albert Skira's magazine Minotaure (December 12, 1933). The lacquered short wig was created by the famous hairdresser Antoine. Elsa said of the latter in her memoirs: “Antoine was then in a mood of great inspiration and was certainly the most progressive and the most enterprising coiffeur of these times”.
